The Player's Handbook does exactly what is expected to do. It teaches one how to enter the world of Dungeons and Dragons. I regularly refer to it while playing whether it be for spell lists or to clarify how to play my class. The Player's Handbook is essential to play the game.

I've been wanting to learn how to play D&D for more than a decade, ever since I saw some guys in college playing it. My friend, who DMs, lent me his player's manual and I read it pretty much cover-to-cover, even though I don't really understand all of it yet.

I thought there was an authorial bias against tieflings (everyone sees them as evil... BUT ARE THEY REALLY??) so my first campaign is going to be with a party of all tieflings, and my very first D&D character is going to be a tiefling paladin named Misery Angelbane. I am BEYOND EXCITED.

Give them to someone who's never played before and they'll have no idea how to use it.
