I hesitate to give this poetry collection a starred rating out of respect for the real victims whose stories are told in this volume. Into the Forest and All The Way Through briefly profiles the stories of dozens of cases of missing women. In the author’s foreword, Pelayo highlights that this disproportionately affects women of color and especially Indigenous women, and how that plays a role in how cases are investigated. While I didn’t necessarily love the author’s writing style, which felt simplistic at times, and some of the details felt gratuitous (as can often be the case in true crime media), I do think that this collection remains victim-focused and highlights vignettes that portray these women as real, complete individuals. A chilling and challenging read, this left me somewhat conflicted but highlighted the role of privilege in whose stories are told.

If I were to quote the poems I highlighted in this book, I would run out of characters to write this review. The recurring themes reflecting the lack of effort in finding justice for missing women. The idea that someone knows what happened, that parents died not knowing what happened to their daughters. This review is a mess. This book was heavy and there is a lot to process.
