This was cute. Even though it is only 98 pages, it took me a couple of days to read this since I was only able to read it on my work computer.

I found Gio to be absolutely adorable and the concept that a Phoenix can travel through space and time when they "blaze" was fascinating. Edgar was also adorable and his story on how he got to that planet was interesting.

I will admit I was a little confused in the beginning but I picked up pretty quickly that the story was not taking place on Earth until sometime in the middle where our two main characters wind up in NYC.

All in all, a very cute short story.

I loved this. Already sent the link to my friends to read. It was funny, clever, and sweet. I liked the ending also. Seems like,a lot of the time, good stories have lame endings, but in this case I thought the ending was poetic and interesting. It seemed pretty fast-paced too; a lot happened. The author did a good job of mixing comedy with fantasy and a touch of scifi.

I'm not sure whether the writing style counts for or against this story, as it sometimes made me laugh and sometimes made me wince, but I enjoyed the book regardless. It's a humorous little adventure with some pretty creative elements. I'm really liking the use of phoenix as protagonists in queer fantasy romance, and murderous vegetation is always a win for me.

Re-read 3/2021:
I loved it, but I wasn't wowed by it as I seemed to be from my original review. I think this was my first Edmond Manning, and I am grateful it lead me to read The Lost and Founds series, but still.... not really "all time favorite" material, at least in my current mood.

Original review:
New favorite author? It's a bit early to say but yes. Yes he is.

This is kind of adorable, other worlds, involving time travel, the phoenix, alternate realities (other worlds?) and teleportation...I didn't quite like the way that Gio spoke or the narrative, although I understood it was to underline a different culture/language/customs, doing that in "broken" English just made me wonder if I was reading a translation of something that should have been in another language - not a comfortable read.

This is a nice piece of fantasy.
I espacially liked Gio, because he had problems, which he battled in this story. Plus it's just really cute.

But I had some trouble with the "fantasy" vocabulary use in the story. And it took me a while to get used to the authors style of writing. Which is definitly not my favourite, but nevertheless the story was really worth the read.

This was well written with great description. I really enjoyed reading about Gio and Edgar. I loved the mix of the two worlds and the growth of their attraction. Well done!

I can't stress enough how much I dislike Present Tense.

In this book:
Plot? No, not much of it really.
Quest? Even less so.
Sex? There are mentions and maybe a scene or a scene and a half.
Insta love? Yep. Human falls for this phoenix hard and fast.

But - brilliantly written. Brilliantly! I am tempted to save the whole story as one long quote.

5 stars plus one dying sun and a Dog Moon.

(kids washed my keyboard with smth, now some of my keys get stuck, esp. letter I. Laugh if you must, but please excuse my constant editing :))
