Solid bok. Spennende, lun. århundre treffer meg alltid rett i nerven. Eg kan faktisk ikkje hugse sist eg måtte gjere ein fysisk anstrengelse for å klare meg her i livet.

Yes, this is story of a family eking out a living on an island off the coast of an island off the coast of rural Norway, but it is, above all, a story of human dignity. The hopes, dreams, joys, and sorrows of the Barroy family are presented to the reader seriously, building a quay, repairing a ship, or having a chair (as opposed to standing for meals) are the collection of triumphs that cumulatively build toward what we might call a good life. The relational dynamics in the family too are taken seriously, they are complex without being dramatized. Emotional threads are hung loosely, some tying back in, and some simply the worn ends of a favorite sweater.

Overall, a novel of stark simplicity, genuine warmth, and a memorable paean to lives tied to land, sea, and each other.
