Very dry in parts but I thought the personal testimonies were super impactful

Dense reading, extremely informative. Probably an objective 5 stars but a 4 for me because I feel like some concepts went over my head and the book was possibly too dense and complicated for its own good

This is a conceptually difficult read, but I can honestly say that it has, in the way that some of the best books do, not only introduced new concepts, but profoundly changed the way in which I parse and relate ideas. This is so much more than a book about the California prison system; it's a master class for anyone interested in racial capitalism and political economy. I now understand why scholars re-read this work and get something out of it every time.
