Definitely a disappointment after The Girl With All The Gifts. Most of the characters' motivations for their actions fell flat for me. I didn't feel the suspense that I believe Carey was trying to create.

Fellside was nothing like [b:The Girl with All the Gifts|17235026|The Girl with All the Gifts|M.R. Carey|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1403033579s/17235026.jpg|23753235]. There are similarities in writing style and how author tries to cover too many characters with their inner monologues and feeling, but the big punchline that I expected or big twist never came.
In the end, it's just a mediocre paranormal thriller.

VERY interesting book. Carey is brilliant at writing what feels familiar with a few twists and turns that are genuinely surprising and novel. The darkness of every context doesn't drag down the pace or make the characters too depressing to be captivating. I really dig the balance Carey achieves and the very intelligent plotting.

I chowed through this book like popcorn, thanks to the story constantly plunging forward into thicker and thicker plot. The speculative side of the story is minimal for much of it (think "Orange is the New Black" plus a ghost now and then) but I was still super absorbed. Towards the end, though, the speculative element veers into REALLY COOL, really surreal territory. I got "Annihilation" vibes from it. I can't decide if I wish there was more of that throughout the book, or if its appearance at the end made it stronger for not having been drawn out. There are definitely some imperfections (including a certain revelation that at first made me go "WOW" and then go "Wait, how?"), and I didn't always love the prose, but I'm giving it 5 stars for how much it gripped me.
