A great book to read kids to share what really happened around the time of the pilgrims and Indians. Hint: they didn't have a picnic table with a turkey in the center and play football after dinner.

We need to learn that while giving thanks is important, the story of why we do it on the 4th Thursday of November has gotten pretty messed up along the way. Keep this in your library, at school or at home, for more fact than fiction.

1621 is a much more honest depiction of the events that took place between the English colonists and Wampanoag tribe in the 17th century than most books I've seen about Thanksgiving. It attempts to debunk common beliefs regarding the so-called first Thanksgiving and offers a historical look at the evolution of the holiday.

While this book does offer a new look at Thanksgiving as the subtitle promises, it's more a brief history of the interactions between the English and Wampanoag in what is now Massachusetts. Illustrated with photos from Plimoth Plantation, it's also a bit of an ad for the historic park. Other books offer more detail, but this is a good starting point for young readers.
