I'm so glad that I finally read this! All of my memories of Anne have been from the film versions so it was lovely to actually read the real words and descriptions of Green Gables and Avonlea. Beautiful story which gave me joy to read.

4.5 stars. While reading this, I kept thinking back to my reaction to Little Women when I read it in December. Both books are about young women/girls set in similar time periods that I completely missed as a child and never got around to reading or even knowing much about until recently. For Little Women, I decided to read the book before watching the movie, but for Anne of Green Gables I watched Anne with an E for the first time at the beginning of the year as my first exposure to the story. All I knew beforehand was that Anne was an orphan adopted by a brother and sister, and she ends up with Gilbert Blythe eventually. I hadn't started the show planning on reading the books, but I ended up getting really attached to the characters and found myself wishing I had more episodes to watch when I finished it, so I figured the next best thing (or perhaps better!) would be to read the books.
I spent a lot of this book comparing the story to the show. It was interesting to see how events got moved around or played out differently (I can't say I was sorry to lose some of the constant threat of "Oh no, Anne might be sent away forever!" from the beginning of the show). I felt like I got a better sense of Marilla as a character early in the book vs. the show (although I also might have bringing some of my knowledge of her character in the show to the book). And in general I just felt so warm and happy returning to these characters and this world, which is where I started comparing my reaction to Little Women, because while I liked it, I definitely ended up feeling much more attached to this book, and I wonder if I would've enjoyed Little Women more if I'd seen the movie first (which I did love).
Because I'm a shipper at heart, I of course also adored all the development of Gilbert and Anne's friendship, their rivalry and how Anne keeps bringing him up but stopping herself from saying his name mid-word, and how he tries to mend fences but she refuses and then basically instantly regrets it. I will say that the best thing about the show being canceled, and my greatest complaint about the book (not a real complaint) is:
Anyways, I really enjoyed this a lot, and I'm eager to continue with the series. I doubt I'll end up getting through the entire series, but I'd at least like to get to Gilbert/Anne getting together/married.
Spoiler
Also that Matthew dies, although I didn't find that out until after I had started the show.I spent a lot of this book comparing the story to the show. Spoiler
The fact that he gives up his position so she can take it and stay near Marilla in the end!!!Spoiler
NOT HAVING TO WATCH MATTHEW DIE ON SCREEN. I was aware he died in the series at some point, but not that he died at the end of the VERY FIRST BOOK. It was very traumatizing!!! I guess I'm glad I had seen someone mention somewhere that he died in the book series but not on the show, or else it would've been even harder to take.Anyways, I really enjoyed this a lot, and I'm eager to continue with the series. I doubt I'll end up getting through the entire series, but I'd at least like to get to Gilbert/Anne getting together/married.

Words cannot describe the way this book made me feel. It was a time capsule that brought me straight back to my girlhood and all it's highs and lows. No piece of media has ever managed to capture all the nuances of growing up as a girl as well as this, it cannot be topped. The love and friendship just emanated from the pages, it filled my heart to the very brim.
The talent Montgomery has for creating such vivid and real characters is honestly unparalleled. I genuinely feel like I have come out of reading this book with a little more appreciation for the world and the people in it than when I went into it.

Lovely
What a lovely book with beautiful writing and wonderful characters. The descriptions of nature are gorgeous. Anne is the quintessential girl, just like Huck Finn. Perfection.
