One of the best novels Iβve read this year!! The story is so unique and the ending - wow!! I HAVE TO read the sequel, Thunderhead! If youβre looking for a dark dystopian fantasy, with several twists, this is for you!

I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to continuing the trilogy. This story on its face is about a world where humanity has overcome mortality, and how that has impacted the world around them. However, I think at its core it's about the power of interpretation. There are constant arguments to be had about the scythedoms few simple laws, because they are so simple which leaves them open to interpretation. A lot of the conflict in the story is driven by this idea, "well it's not against the laws so..."
I loved the characters of Citra and Rowan at the beginning, and think they independently developed well. The story gave them a lot of growth as they ventured through their training. The only piece I didn't love was the their romantic interest in eachother. It felt a bit shoe-horned in, as if it was inevitable that it would happen. In fact, if Faraday hadn't laid it out as a ground rule, I wonder if the thought of romance would have even crossed their minds as they trained to be lethal tools for the scythedom?
Shusterman is an excellent author, and I've loved any work of his I've picked up, and Scythe is no exception. I look forward to Thunderhead next.

I'll just say this: At the end of every chapter, I was like, "Holy crap, what just happened? What did I just read? How the heck is this a YA novel?"
I read this as a 25 year old, after my mother and my 12 year old brother read it and told me I needed to. They were right--I loved it and breezed through the whole trilogy within a couple weeks. I couldn't put any of them down!

Awesome idea, but wished it wasn't a young adult novel so the author didn't have to hold anything back. It was a great story but could have been sooo much more. Also, I didn't like the main characters falling in love. It was forced and unnecessary. They could have just been really good friends. Definitely reading the next novel though to see where this story goes.
