It's stylistically perfect. Beautiful and correct prose. A classic. But I still dislike it.

"'...Look under the bed'. Of course I stooped instantly. I defy anybody not to have done so" p. 31

“‘...a flake of rust as big as the palm of my hand fell off the plate, all of itself’” p. 54

"The whisper of his conviction seemed to open before me a vast and uncertain expanse, as of a crepuscular horizon on a plain-or was it perchance, at the coming of night? One had not the courage to decide;" p. 155

“‘Because he is not good enough,’I said brutally” p. 206

One of my takes is that Conrad is trying to be progressive on race, which is admirable, though it also causes his era's latent racism to show through.

Conrad is the great writer of pre-modern prose. Reminds me of his contemporary, Mahler. No better Conrad than Lord Jim.

The cowardly act of a stressful moment brings a life of moral uncertainty, only resolved by...

Those new to the man may wish to start with a shorter work, like Heart of Darkness, Youth, End of the Tether, or Typhoon.

Dangers of being a Romantic. Thought of Hunter frequently during the book, for better or worse. I have a sort of third-hand nostalgia for the period and setting that I think Conrad would try to refute, but persists. Either the book or myself got lost for the last quarter, absolutely reeled back in at the end.
