This book was so incredibly heartbreaking and beautiful. I had no idea what I was getting myself into but I couldn't stop reading. These Queens were fierce until the end. Some fell sooner than others and I can't imagine what it would be like to have been a homosexual in the 80's-90's when AIDS was rampant and no one cared. This book gave me a glimpse. Some sections were heavy and hard to listen too but they are a reflection of real traumas that happen to people all over the world. Angel was my favourite character and she was flawless right to the very end. My heart broke for Daniel, Venus, and Juanito.

This book is stunning, expertly written, and heartbreaking. It brings the characters to life so vividly that it's hard not to love them and want the best for them. This story is raw in its humanity. The humanity of its characters is constantly reduced by the world, its systems, and its people who have failed them in every way, but they remain human even when going on feels like the hardest thing imaginable. Please read the content warnings for this book as it is a very heavy read.

This is an incredibly compelling, wonderful book. I know the tags and content warnings can make it seem really dark, but there is a lot of light and life in these characters, and they have a lot of fun. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. Absolutely worth a look for anyone who is interested in learning a little about the history and culture of drag and/or is looking for a rich (if not exactly lighthearted) lgbtq-focused story.

My head is still reeling from finishing this. Not only did this book completely emotionally break me, it did so while completely immersing me in the atmosphere of the era and in the lives of the characters. This book goes between perspectives, showing the lives of several gay men and trans women as they begin to weave together and fray apart through time. While many parts of the book are peppered with wit, it does not shy away from the dark realities of queer people during the 80's and 90's. There are so many nuances to Cassara's writing throughout the story, details that he changes as time passes that really makes the story more immersive and more devastating. From setting to characters to theme, this is a brilliant work of art and a beautiful homage to those we have lost.
