interesting! i liked that the length mirrored that of the gospels: makes a difference to saramago's gospel of jesus christ which i read earlier this year and found a bit of a drag mostly due to its length. i feel like every retelling of the gospels tries to make its protagonist mOrE hUmAn but this REALLY does: mary actually kind of spends the whole time being nervous and anxious and apprehensive which feels like such a change from the binary believer/non-believer identification in the actual gospels. toibin allows for the grey areas. enjoyed 3.5/5
