The audiobook reader was great and the story was sweet. A historical fiction with Woody, a 17-year old orphan from the dust bowl, talking his way into the drivers seat of a trailer taking 2 giraffes, Girl and Boy, west to the San Diego zoo with the Old Man and his crush, Red. All wrapped into a heart-felt tale as Woody is coming to the end of his life but must get the story down so it’s passed on to someone that needs to know it. An adventure of friendship, love, loss, and so much of the history of the time. Just an enjoyable read.

The first half of this book read like the boring storytelling of an old man who you don’t know (which it was), but the story picked up and somewhere along the way I guess I fell in love with the man, his story, and his band of characters because I finished this book with tears running down my face

I read this one for book club. Not my normal kind of read but I enjoyed it. The narrator made all the difference. If felt like the main character was sharing his stories. I did listen to it at 2x speed so I do feel like it would have been a little slow for me if I hadn't.

It is the kind of book that people who like to read about someone's travels and adventures would probably like.

If you enjoy William Kent Kruger or Amor Towles, you will also enjoy reading this book. The protagonist is a young boy, orphaned by the dust bowls of the 1930s. It is the story of his trip cross country to deliver two giraffes to the new San Diego zoo and the variety of folks he encounters. Excellent read.
