I was so delightfully frustrated with Bree as I read this. She did so many things that I would’ve never done. But that certainly aided the twists and turns of the story—which were plentiful, and often hard to predict. Once I picked this up, it was hard to put down!

The only downside to this book is... I wish I read this SOONER!!!

Legendborn is an incredible story with a badass protagonist, fantastic world-building, and prose that is so easy to digest because of its beauty. Tracy Deonn really knows how to make readers like myself have very strong feelings about the characters, whether they are positive or negative. It was also a great fantasy story that incorporated the terminology and history of the Order in the Legendborn world without making it confusing. This is extra important because a lot of fantasy books tend to dump a bunch of terms that make it hard to get into the world of the book for a while.

Arthurian retellings are very new to me (besides that one Magic Tree House book). However, Deonn provided part of this history that made me interested in potentially reading other retellings of this legend.

Now that Bloodmarked is out, I plan on reading it soon so I can go back into the world of Bree and the world of the Legendborn Cycle.

I just reread this due to the sequel coming out shortly and loved it as much this time as when I originally read it in 2020. It is well thought out and developed. I like that it allows me to see a perspective that I cannot otherwise appreciate (of a black girl in the south) using a great storyline in a way that was real and not preachy. There is great representative and well handled discussion of difficult subjects. Tracey Deonn also wrote such an awesome refreshing novel take on the King Arthur legends, I am incredibly excited to see where else she takes this version of the Round Table.

As a local, I knew as soon as I heard about Legendborn it had to go on my TBR and it absolutely did not disappoint. The way Deonn has layered this book with the Camelot derived fantasy elements as well as with the Southern history and experience of black people from the days of slavery to the present is really remarkable. It does not feel forced or didactic, the elements of the story fit together neatly and lead up to the truly thrilling conclusion of this part 1. The last 100 pages or so were paced so fantastically, and with such suspense I was totally unable to put the book down. Not just Bree, but the cast of characters are all beautifully developed and fleshed out. Tracy Deonn is on my must-buy authors list after this start!

On the one hand the book was super diverse and I loved how much Black History was woven through it.

On the other hand the plot did feel very generic of all other typical YA fantasy novels.
