As a local, I knew as soon as I heard about Legendborn it had to go on my TBR and it absolutely did not disappoint. The way Deonn has layered this book with the Camelot derived fantasy elements as well as with the Southern history and experience of black people from the days of slavery to the present is really remarkable. It does not feel forced or didactic, the elements of the story fit together neatly and lead up to the truly thrilling conclusion of this part 1. The last 100 pages or so were paced so fantastically, and with such suspense I was totally unable to put the book down. Not just Bree, but the cast of characters are all beautifully developed and fleshed out. Tracy Deonn is on my must-buy authors list after this start!

On the one hand the book was super diverse and I loved how much Black History was woven through it.

On the other hand the plot did feel very generic of all other typical YA fantasy novels.

I really liked this book and found the concept as well as the plot to be really interesting. I also loved the subtle diversity. 

However, I would say that the ending felt a bit rushed and in general the pacing felt a tad inconsistent at times but it was still a good read.

This was SO GOOD. One of the best books I've read this year for sure. I love how the author so skilfully wove together the legacies of intergenerational racial trauma with myths and legends. Definite plot twist at the end that blew my mind! I grew to really care about the characters and their growth and relationships. 
Can't wait to read the sequel!
