6 hours - I cannot put into words how I feel about this book. It feels so much larger than just a book. All of the characters were just so so likeable, and their interactions made me physically react several times, which is something that rarely occurs for me. All the characters were so cleverly developed, and the plot was so interesting and engaging, and the ending was just perfect. It discussed so many important issues, and not only discussed them but so expertly wove them into the story itself. I'm going to be thinking about this book for a while.

I was so delightfully frustrated with Bree as I read this. She did so many things that I would’ve never done. But that certainly aided the twists and turns of the story—which were plentiful, and often hard to predict. Once I picked this up, it was hard to put down!

devoured this book.

Bree is my favorite YA protagonist ever—smart and quick, honest, and brave beyond doubt. She sees what’s happening in front of her own eyes and she actually believes it.

Her way of coping with grief is all-too-real even if it’s not healthy. Was there romance? Yes. Technically, there could even be two romances, and despite how much I adore Nick and Sel; this story is about Bree and her grief. Bree and her ancestors. Bree and belonging

The magic is just the cherry on top. Mwah. Best fantasy book I’ve read all year.

As a local, I knew as soon as I heard about Legendborn it had to go on my TBR and it absolutely did not disappoint. The way Deonn has layered this book with the Camelot derived fantasy elements as well as with the Southern history and experience of black people from the days of slavery to the present is really remarkable. It does not feel forced or didactic, the elements of the story fit together neatly and lead up to the truly thrilling conclusion of this part 1. The last 100 pages or so were paced so fantastically, and with such suspense I was totally unable to put the book down. Not just Bree, but the cast of characters are all beautifully developed and fleshed out. Tracy Deonn is on my must-buy authors list after this start!

Okay, wow. Wow wow wow. This has been sitting on my shelf for about 2 years and thank GOD I happened to pick it up now, less than a month away from the release of the second book. Because I think I would have DIED if I had to wait 2 years for the next installment.

Honestly, this is one of my favorite books I've read all year, and I'm not a huge YA person. But Bree is such a magnetic character, and DAMN do the mysteries in this book never stop coming. Deonn's mastery with weaving in the reality of trauma and being a black woman in America put Legendborn on a whole other level for me, though. Between all of that and then the LGBTQ representation to boot, I am never gonna shut up about this book.

All I can say without spoilers is I cannot wait to see more of Bree and to follow her in her journey. And...okay, yes, I am a teenage queer at heart and want more Sel, too.
