Didn’t realize this “classic” revolves around toilet humor.

Who couldn't love a story with: loveably dillusional characters who have the most outrageous adventures; pokes fun at the Catholic Church and 17th century society; is written like a Greek epic; and is alternately hilarious and melancoly? This is the story of Alonso Quixano, an elderly gentleman who is obsessed with stories of chivarly. Eventually his passion for stories of adventure turns into a madness of sorts whereby he believes himself to be a knight errant, calling himself Don Quixote de la Mancha. Sancho Panza, a local countryman, becomes his squire and they set off in order to protect the weak and suffering and punish wrongdoers. However, Don Quixotes perceptions of the world around him are often clouded by his fervent desire to live in a world like his favorite stories. His adventures are either misguided by his dillusions or are the cunning enactments of people around him who enjoy witnessing his madness. While in the beginning Sancho is constantly trying to point out his masters misconceptions (using the most astounding proverbs), in the end roles reverse and it is Sancho who ends up believing in enchantments and wizards and fair maidens. Alternatively, Don Quixote, wearied of the world, regains his lucidity but ends up meeting his demise. Once experienced, it becomes clear to the reader why Don Quixote remains one of the most influencial pieces of literature ever written.

Don Quixote is simultaneously the best and worst book I've ever read. One of the few books that ,while reading, I wanted to put it down and stop reading just so that the book would never end. But of course I read it all in it's hilarious entirety.

At first I found it funny, then I found it needlessly long-winded, then I realized it was satire and it went back to being hilarious. We all should read Don Quixote and we all should recognize that, from the gluttonous, proverb abusing, low-born fools to the well-read, chivalrous, noble knights should be our best and be purely ourselves. The way Sancho and Don Quixote gained infamy that grew into a beloved fame while doing nothing differently, they just kept trying to go on chivalric adventures is such a great tale.

One of the best books I have ever read and it's potent culture that flows from it's pages left a lasting impression on my worldview and the way I see myself.

Easiest 5/5 hogs I've given since I started reviewing books for myself. If I read this review again to remember Don Quixote it will be hard not to start the adventure all over again.

“I do not deny that what happened to us is a thing worth laughing at. But it is not worth telling, for not everyone is sufficiently intelligent to be able to see things from the right point of view.”
― Cervantes, Don Quixote

Don Quixote is a man living in a world of delusion, believing himself to be a Knight Errant, tasked with roaming the country in order to right the wrongs, fight the unjust and protect the meek.

A comedy that truly stands the test of time, remaining wonderfully hilarious and engaging all these years later which makes it stand out as a classic.

Not the most skilled and certainly not the most successful.. often ending up causing more problems than he actually solves but he has heart, and does not hesitate to do what he thinks is the right and best thing to do for others.

Funny throughout but the comedy is often cut through with moments of sadness and pity as I found myself feeling both admiration for the character of Don Quixote drive to help others but pity for his separation from reality and the way he is taken advantage of and mocked.

Overall a long, but worthwhile read that truly highlights the timelessness of literature and will continue to pop up throughout pop culture.

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote
