I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this book at all and actually found it very boring. It became a chore to read, which was disappointing as I've enjoyed the other books in the series immensely.

Predictable with far too many convenient shortcuts that replace genuine storytelling with mass-production. A shame really.

As usually, well written by Wilbur Smith. Unfortunately, there are quite some inconsistencies with the previous books from this series.

This book is crap. I'm amazed I stuck with this series. Never mind the glaring inconsistencies from book to book, the man is contradicting him self from page to page in this one!!! Nothing makes sense. And there are so many repetitive sections. Was he hoping to run rings around us, to hide the rubbish and threadbare plot? So glad I'm at the end of this series. I sincerely hope to never have to re join it.

SpoilerI found it really strange how the new pharaoh, upon the return of Taita, wanted to order the arrest and execution of both him and the king accompanying him. Seems like very bad statesmanship to order a much beloved general to death and murdering a foreign king with an army of 5000 outside the direct gates of your capital. Most strangely was Taita who was like: oh, young one, no worries I’ll just f*ck off and continue my glorious mission to defeat your enemy my pharaoh. Like: you must be a little salty this is the welcome you get after being almost annihilated on the battlefield, right?

The utter stupidity and naivety of Taita is grating. He’s a Gary Stue with the arrogance and self-obsession of Narcissus narrating a plot that is so cliche it makes me want to throw the entire book into an active volcano. Like, dude, you have bigger problems than puffing up your chest because your prettier than the rest. You’re about to be horribly executed (unluckily the magical fairy wings of fate free our Gary Stue just in time and the horror of this book continues)

Historical accuracy? We don’t know her. Brilliant plot expansion of precious books in the series? Dead and buried

Good lord what a waste of time
