I am not ok nor will I ever be ok because this book has DESTROYED ME. It is a MASTERPIECE. I don’t think I’ve ever been so turned on and ready to cry in the span of the same chapter as many times as I was reading this book. It’s messy and emotional and REAL, and manages to handle things like grief, strained familial relationships, and finding new love in such a compassionate and beautiful way. It also did a few tropes I normally don’t love (second chance romance and a third act breakup) serious justice, because for once it felt like without the circumstances that made those things happen, Sloane and Dom wouldn’t have been the people they needed to be to build a strong, healthy love together. This book had impeccable spice, too, but it is so much more than that. J.L. Seegars is a new insta-buy author for me.

I’ll always try to support Black stories so this one frustrated me a little. It was just SO repetitive ☹️ it’s like there wasn’t a page that didn’t reference the colour of Dom’s eyes or the liquid heat she felt?? Like? We get it. Also did not like the whole ‘pretending to hate her for 12 years” story. I think it could have been a truly beautiful without that part. Some parts were so beautifully written that it encouraged me to power through though.

WOW. for a debut novel this was BEAUTIFULLY written and thought out. sloane and dom are such mature, complex characters and i loved how we got to dive into them processing their own grief and trauma with each other. dom is the perfect man, jesus christ. where can i find one and sign me up!!

there was definitely an insta-love/insta-lust vibe. i would’ve liked just a little more time with sloane and dom being enemies before forming a relationship since they have “hated” each other for years. it did feel a little dragged on and wordy at times, especially the last 40% so there were moments i had to push through but besides that this was a phenomenal read and an amazing debut!

Ooh Chile this was a long read!! The skit was top top TOP tier and I just love the trope where the guy has loved the girl for ages before.

I love how the author tackled such a complex situation such as being a widow and I Love that Dom respected the fact that she loved Eric and would never take that away from her.

J.L Seegars has a gift for writing because this book was beautiful!
