In some ways this novella changed that. I got to see new sides to Bast that I wouldn't have known from the series, which was nice.
Some things that were a bit off-putting to me were the inconsistency in the narrator - at times it felt like it was being told from Bast's perspective, but then suddenly the narrator felt a bit more omniscient - and also the language. I loved the language in the previous books, but this one felt a bit simplified. Overall it had a more YA feel than the others (which is not bad, just not what I expected based on his other works).
Despite these things I enjoyed the story itself a lot, and I'm glad I took the time to read it. I should add that I had not read The Lightning Tree beforehand, so all of it was completely new to me.

Dislikes:
- rothfuss still struggles with writing female characters outside of the male gaze. It’s less ick than previous publications. But it feels like he sees male characters as default characters with agency and nuance.
- the artwork of human famous was a bit over wrought.
Likes
- subtle references to what happened off page. Eg Nettie and Jessom.
- weaving in the day
- tantalising mystery of the embrils.
- a couple of beautifully written sentences. Which I can’t find or share easily because I read the hardback
Moderate: Child abuse, Domestic abuse, and Injury/Injury detail

I really enjoy Patrick Rothfuss's writing - although to be honest I didn't particularly like The Slow Regard of Silent Things - and this novella has got me hooked again. An enjoyable and emotional read, I was tempted to reread it as soon as I finished, just to catch the little details that seemed irrelevant the first time, but weren't.
This one reignited my desire and excitement for the final book in the trilogy <3
