I found this one surprisingly tense for a (mainly) character-driven book. Loved the complexity and the depth of the characters which made them feel so real to me. Quite messy, but ain't life always?

Reread: this was devastating in the best way haha. I think i got more from it in this second read, but possibly just because of the time I've had to reflect on it in between.

Sally Rooney managed to put very specific complicated experiences into words that helped me understand experiences I thought I was alone in feeling, and for that this is a favourite book of mine. I worded that badly, she would have worded it perfectly.

I related to the main character a lot, sometimes her feelings and experiences were very familiar to me (

minus the affair with the married man

). I thought I was going to read from both Bobbi's and Frances' perspectives but actually, the book is from Frances' pov only. I really don't know why, that was a missed opportunity, Bobbi seemed very interesting. The ending was kind of ~meh~ but it is what it is. Overall, I still think it's a good book that people should read if it's their thing.

I'll be honest, going into this book I didn't think I'd enjoy, but there's something in it that's so compelling. I find Frances to be a good main character. She was woefully flawed  but you still felt as though you could root for her. There were times where I was deeply jealous of her and times where I was consumingly depressed for her. There's something in Frances that I think is relatable in the worse sort of way.
