Deeply underwhelming. Lacks the character depth of Death on the Nile or Murder on the Orient Express - let alone the masterpiece that is And Then There Were None - and without that there wasn’t really anything to carry me through to the ending. An ending which was unexpected, sure, but felt redundant and anticlimactic. Christie’s writing is still good, and there’s something I find so fascinating about the little slice of mid century English country life that she portrays, but this might be the last one of her books I try for a while. At least Poirot wasn’t too annoying in this one.

pity he was the murderer but still,

Absolutely floored me with the ending, did not see it coming at all and it was astounding!

The writing is easy to read and funny, I can see why Agatha Christie is still the world's best selling author! Nearly 100 years since this book was first published and it still hits home.

Even retirement cannot stop Hercule Poirot from doing what he does best: solving mysteries!
This time he doesn’t have Hastings with him. So with Dr. Sheppard as his assistant, Poirot sets out to investigate. A typical whodunit with a surprising twist! As usual, he doesn’t say much and he has his peculiar ways.
"My friend Hastings, he of whom I told you, used to say of me that I was the human oyster. But he was unjust. Of facts, I keep nothing to myself. But to everyone his own interpretation of them."

One of my favourite characters in this story is Caroline. She knows almost everything that happens in King’s Abbot.
"Caroline can do any amount of finding out by sitting placidly at home. I don’t know how she manages it, but there it is."

I can't quite give this (or any Christie yarn) 5 stars because of the unnecessary cruelties peppered through her work; nasty little asides about anyone who isn't white, able-bodied or neurotypical. That said, there's so much to appreciate and love about this story decades on. It's told with wit and humour, and changing pace from Hastings as a narrator both lets us experience a different side to Poirot and gives us the benefit of the narrator's close position in the community (as well as to his incredible gossip of a sister, Caroline.)
The mystery features a strong cast, all with their own secrets and skeletons to hide. Unraveling each one in turn is so much fun that I genuinely felt sad when it was all over. My favorite Poirot so far!
