warning for major Steel Ball Run spoilers ahead

true rating 5/5. full marks. i do have a few criticisms but nothing big enough to dock even a fraction off.

going to start with my criticisms:

- a few things went relatively unexplained and then were never used again, mainly D4Cs early appearances / abilities. what was up with valentine just being able to not be affected by projectiles at one point? it was really cool but never expanded on or used again

- so many characters, not enough backstory for them. i would've loved to see more of hot pants' or magent magent's pasts. i know we got some of hot pants' backstory but it wasnt enough for me. but that's part of writing manga, knowing what to put in and what to leave out. araki did really well with the backstory he did create for the characters of this part.

-funny valentine is a piece of shit

- my favorite characters died (it made me sad)

now for things i liked:
- my favorite characters were gyro, hot pants, and johnny. gyro and HP tied for first, johnny in second. probably lucy or diego (diego was really interesting to me) or maybe even wekapipo in third.

- favorite arc / battle / story chunk was either sugar mountain, civil war, or the early D4C arc with wekapipo and diego. or silent way. or even the world of man. excellent arcs

- where sbr really succeeded was with its characters. johnny was an amazing protagonist with really good growth and progression and an amazing story. gyro is tied for my favorite jobro / dual protagonist with hermes. he's so fun, has an insane backstory and arc, and his ability is one of the coolest ive seen personally. hot pants is such a cool character with an interesting stand ability and her usage of it is creative, and her interactions with other characters are so. im running out of words for her. she's awesome

- again the characters, but this time the antsgonists. funny valentine was written in a way to where i genuinely hate him. he's scum and hes so well written that it's a little concerning. everything he did makes perfect sense with his motives and backstory and it makes me hate him all the more. and dont get me started on diego. piece of shit. such an interesting character, though, and i love how his backstory was interwoven with johnnys so perfectly. two sides of the same coin, both genius jockeys, but with different ideals and motivations because of how their childhoods were. and the minor antagonist cast is stellar, from sandman to ringo roadagain to Blackmore. phenomenal villains.

- the ending. once valentine was defeated with tusk act 4, i genuinely thought it was over once he was buried over and over again. i also thought johnny might take the deal. but having d4c/valentine bring in a diego from another dimension to defeat johnny was genius. only for him to be taken out by lucy steel with yet another stroke of genius (#girlboss).

- i cried when johnnys dad came to see him finish the steel ball run race. johnnys story came full circle.

overall, one of my favorite parts. up there with stone ocean and golden wind. sbr has been all I've really been able to think about for a few days and i still can't believe im done. ill probably reread in a few years. can't wait for the anime adaptation.

A refreshingly decent reboot with reimagined characters and an awfully rushed ending.
