This was a great ghost story! I had to suspend belief just a little to get into it because I had a really hard time believing that Sky would fall for the whole premise in the first place, and then just keep wavering back and forth the way she did, but to be honest that probably has more to do with me not being religious or spiritual in any way. It didn't take away from the story at all.
The middle was perhaps a bit slow, and the details felt like they were slow in being revealed, and a few editing issues pulled me out of the story at times, but the last 100 pages or so were very riveting and suspenseful. A satisfying read. :)

The plot structure and idea of people being part of a cult it is quite interesting. However, the main character of the story is quite annoying as it constantly contradicts herself with what she wants, thinks, and does. I totally understand the fact that she is lost and in high school, so I will not talk about that. It is kind of clear that from the beginning there was something totally fishy on this religious group… I like how Sonnenberg plays with the archetypes of the “light” which usually is related to positive and good energies. However, even though the people from the cult are continually looking at the “Light”, one can see them always surrounded by darkness. I like the juxtaposition of light and dark, and how something “good” can be something “bad” and that depends on the interpretation and the people involved. I really strong point about this topic is the weird spiritual presence in the house. If you are sensible to this kind of energies and you find it really really disturbing it means something, and you should get away from it, but teenage years are all about fitting in so nobody cares about a dark energy lurking the walls of the house that you wish to live in.

It was hard for me to get hooked by the book, even though the whole idea seemed amazing, and it is mainly because of the main character. Sky is such an outsider and weird, she has this air of superiority that all those weird, “geeky”, know it all, fans of the underground have in common (I even knew people like that). However, I totally understand that the cults need weak minded people to have followers and to sell their weird ideas, so I get why the main character is like this.

The author uses some of the typical elements of literature to set the mood and for foreshadowing purposes. The darkening of the sky in halloween and some other elements were used just fine. All the main characters need its lackey and this is not the exception. I think this is a really good start for a first time author. Sonnenberg is on the right path, I love thriller and love to be at the edge of my chair, and I can see Sonnenberg accomplishing that… maybe in the next book, but she will get there.

I was provided a free copy by the author for this novel. I am almost always hunting for occult fiction, but rarely do I get such books that hook me up enough to read it in one go . My Soul to Keep was one such read. Utterly thrilling, fast paced and very interesting. It contained the perfect dose of paranormal, excitement, even romance. Just the way I like my books 😉 I loved the book!

13 year old Sky, joins a new school where she gets to join a seemingly spiritual group that she feels, understands her in a way, no one else can. Gradually, it starts getting mysterious in The Manor and supernatural events start to unravel before her. How she deals with her own faith, along with the occurrences around her, is what fills the pages of this book.

However, I found a few points quite unreal and forced into the plot, like Sky, who is just 13, is able to cope up with a lot that’s going on in the Manor. That age kids don’t usually bother about much, apart from their own life and leisure. But she consistently feels spiritual and behaves like a grown up would, about occult and supernatural. Then Mitchell, his speeches and though delivery got a little boring in between. The end was quite predictable and probably written in some kind of haste.

But all in all, the actions were tied up and developed very well. Quite apt read for Halloween. It does justice to the paranormal genre. Go pick it up if you love the genre, I am sure it wont disappoint you

This is the second book I've read by this author and was pleasantly surprised. I think this author took to the paranormal very well, and it was a great read. I was caught up in the story, and really enjoyed watching the characters unravel the mystery even if I can guess what it was before them.

There's a lot of really good twists and turns in this book, and some pretty thrilling and terrifying scenes. I love paranormal and horror genres and I think for the first book in this genre, the author did an outstanding job. I was engaged. I was on the edge of my seat. I kept reading instead of going back for real life and that's the hallmark of a good book. I wanted to get lost in the story.

Highly recommend this book to people looking for a little horror and mystery in their stories! Well done!
