I wanted to like this book more than I did. The daughter's voice is strong and compelling, and I had sympathy for her family's ordeal. I found the father less sympathetic, although he has suffered so much physically---maybe it's because the children had no control in the family's situation, or maybe it's because I found him rather arrogant at times. Regardless, I felt like so much built up until the moment the family moves, and then the book abruptly ends.

This one is tough to judge: it's an interesting story about the aftermaths and affects a cop shooting has on the cop and his family. It was good, but gruesome and tough to read. It wasn't enjoyable. I suppose if you have a really thick skin you can say that this one is super-great, but that's not me. It's good, but difficult.

The father was a police officer in a small Cape Cod community in the late 1970's. He was brutally attacked by the local crime boss. He was shot at close range and lost most of his jaw. The book tells the struggle the family went through during that time, the anger at the lack of investigation and justice in the case, and finally their move to find peace for their family. I found it really interesting, but could have lived without the language especially in the father's chapters.
