Spencer Quinn has done it again: a compelling mystery with one of a kind characters in unique situations and laugh out loud moments are just as present in his upcoming release, Mrs. Plansky’s Revenge, as in his beloved Chet & Bernie series.

Loretta Planksy may have been recently widowed, but she’s doing okay. She’s still playing tennis, handling her family’s demands/requests for funds, and living her life— even if it feels a little smaller without her husband. But when a cybercrime steals her funds, she steels herself and sets off to reclaim her money.

Though this book lacks a dog, it makes up for it in unique characters. Dinu, the cybercriminal in a tough situation, is more sympathetic than you might think. But not too sympathetic, of course. This aligns nicely with Quinn’s typical range of villainy, from outright monsters to people who perhaps would have chosen differently if circumstances had allowed.

Mrs. Planksy’s sense of humor and internal narration were quite funny, and oddly enough reminiscent of Chet’s narration style.

There is more violence than the typical Chet & Bernie adventure, in my opinion, but it also could have stood out more because of the age and physical limitations of the titular character here. Plus, with Chet and Bernie, I know Chet will save the day. I had no such instincts about Mrs. Planksy. If she had a dog, I would never had doubted her.

Mrs. Planksy’s Revenge will be available July 25, 2023.

Thank you to the author, NetGalley, and Tor Publishing Group for an advanced e-ARC such that I could share my honest opinions.
