This was my favorite of the stories in the [b:Tales of Christmas|28571654|Tales of Christmas|Anton Chekhov|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/book/50x75-a91bf249278a81aabab721ef782c4a74.png|48732263] collection. I would recommend this for even young children. It speaks to a general optimism in humanity that I love to support in others and the storyline is unique.

A quickie you can read out loud in about the time it takes a kid to drink his hot chocolate.

A new take on the fable of Santa Claus, the author creates living embodiments of hatred, envy, malice and repentance who try to kidnap santa in hopes of creating these emotions in the children who were much too happy during Christmas. In all honesty, the idea failed spectacularly and hence they never tried again.

This was very short and just as forgettable. There’s a somewhat interesting parable in here about the necessity of malevolence in the world, but it’s not powerfully made and I’d go to Pixar a dozen times before I’d pick this up again. It assumes a lot of previous knowledge about this extended Santa Claus ‘verse that Baum had written, like OK bud not everybody’s done the Santa Claus homework. Also, fuck LFB forever for his attempts to egg on the genocide of Native Americans.

Well that was a short and cheerful holiday read.
I had no idea that L. Frank Baum had written this but it clearly had his voice all over it as I couldn't help but clearly imagine this world and Santa Claus and these Daemons he describes.

Kinda curious to know if this was a picture book, or maybe it was made into one later as it lends itself well for that, what with the precise descriptions Baum writes.

An enjoyable little short story. Probably wouldn't make sense if you haven't read Baum's Life & Adventures of Santa Claus first.
