You can really tell this was edited by Ted Hughes. Though I perhaps understand the want to edit out some less sensitive/more tone deaf parts of her poems, I find hacking off a line here or there (as happened in Lady Lazarus for example, which I noticed when I listened to Plath read the poems herself) ultimately only hurts the works themselves.
I suppose I’ll have to read Ariel for the unedited poems (although it’s possible they were edited there too my knowledge of Plath is altogether minimal).

4.5/5 There's no doubt that this is a masterclass in poetry and process. However, personally, the at times confounding imagery and excessive crafting sometimes presents as a buffer to true connection and memorability. To me, her best works are those that capitalise on accessible metaphors, for example a head between two hospital pillows becomes an unblinking eye, taking everything in (tulips). Perhaps that's a flaw on my part though, she is not an easy poet to grapple with.
