“Life is nothing but riddles … we spend our whole lives puzzling them out. Sadly, as soon as we find the answer, the riddle changes. Does it not?”

Vibrant, descriptive, and chilling-and that’s just the first five pages.

If it weren’t for a book club I joined over the summer, I would have never picked this book to read. I’m so thankful that I am being exposed to authors and stories I would have otherwise overlooked. This story is incredible. Brom is not only a gifted writer, but his artwork is stunning and I constantly found myself flipping back to the illustrations as I read.

On several occasions, I would have to put down this book because of FEELINGS. I ran the gamut of emotions throughout the story and had to wipe the tears away once or twice. But the one constant mood was that of unease. This story never lets the reader get comfortable, and doesn’t let you walk away easily.

Narrated by actor, singer, and playwright Barrie Kreinik, she sets a tone and cadence to this dark tale that is going to stay with me for a long time.

A fantastic take on the classic puritan witch story. Fantastic characterization of Samson, and I loved Abitha’s transformation throughout the book. Brom’s paintings are eerie and his way of storytelling sucked me in. I could not stop reading!

This book is a bit sluggish and a bit repetitive - it could have been shorter and accomplished the same more effectively.

It reminded me of The VVitch, so if you're in the mood for pilgrim themed horror that is not really scary you may enjoy.
