I decently enjoyed this book and it's sympathy for the devil angle in a story about what could happen when someone is accused of "deviltry" and decides to become the boogeyman others claim them to be. However I knocked a half star off my score because of
the gratuitous and in my opinion completely unnecessary murder of Abitha's cat Booka. Yes I get she was accused of witchcraft and Booka was seen as her familiar in a book set in the 1600s. But when you have characters as comically EVIL as the antagonists in this story, I personally don't think you need to throw in animal torture to drive home that they deserve what they get in the end.

I enjoyed this book. It delivered on the horror as well as the overall spooky, dark and witchy atmosphere.

I loved Abitha and I loved that she got her revenge in the end because she was treated horribly and the puritanical cruelty was extremely hard to read at times.

Her relationship with Samson was interesting to read and I liked the way that the magic worked and developed.

Sometimes the parts with Forest, Sky and Creek felt like they dragged a bit and I was more invested overall in Abitha's situation compared to theirs but it didn't take away from the book.

This is a great read for autumn and Halloween.

couldn’t put down Slewfoot by Brom! It’s got everything—Puritans, folklore, demons, and a badass woman fighting back against injustice. The way religion is used to justify awful treatment and how social hysteria takes over is so intense. Plus, the illustrations are gorgeous. I don’t usually go for horror, but I wanted to try something new, and now I want to read all of Brom’s books. Heads up though, it gets pretty gory, so be prepared!

A perfect spooky read, especially for those who are interested in the Salem Witch Trials. Brom’s incorporation of pagan mythology and the witch trials conducted by the puritans made this such an interesting story. I absolutely couldn’t put it down.
