This play by Howard gives a very interesting insight into the common practices of Puritans during the Civil Wars in England. As an added benefit, the women of this play show more power and control than their male counterparts.
The Day family (the Puritans and the bad guys) uses guardianship of young women to seize land from Royalists, along with many other unfair deeds.
The heroes of this play are the two couples: Colonels Blunt and Careless, and Arbella and Ruth. Contrary to the usual plots of Restoration plays, it is Ruth and Arbella who are the true conquerors of the Day family, demonstrating that women are more capable than men of overcoming some situations.
Overall, this is a very entertaining play, and additionally is very enlightening.
