Had to explain was a “rake” was to my mom. The self proclaimed Bridgerton fan thought this book was about gardening.

I really enjoyed this fresh take on Victorian HR. Also the real history of it was fascinating (and disturbing), the Victorian’s “fern fever” is such an odd hobby. The Contagious Diseases Act info was horrific but unsurprising.

I do this this book was too long in that the main characters seemed to go round in circles just repeating the same conflict without really having any attempt at loving to a resolution. All would seem to be moving in that direction only for the next paragraph to do a complete 180 on the characters feelings etc.

Overall I found the story very unique with characters who had actually done bad things trying to find a way to being a better person but still themselves.

I will definitely be continuing as the next book is a character I’m very interested in seeing their story arc.

I always try historical novels but I usually always find them so boring ugh.

I am falling for Falling for a Rake. Yes I am! This a wonderful book. My first read by Miss Pendle. I am not a big fan of historical romance but this book change my mind.

Oscar and Emily is hot. They have chemistry. I like how Miss Pendle sizzling the chemistry with style. Not too dirty/ vivid but not too cold/ lukewarm. The plot is also interesting without too much drama.

The whole story is very good. I enjoy it very much.

This one was a genuine surprise– well-researched, emotional, true to the period, and written in a way that didn’t make me want to claw my eyes out (there’s one typo of reign/rein that stuck out to me, though). Fake engagement/marriage of convenience crew, this one’s for you.

The end of the book managed to surprise me in one way, even though I suspected the twist, and I find it a good thing when a reader knows what’s coming and the author still manages to make it hurt (even if I’d have liked some other scenes to fill that relationship out). I was so pleased at the inclusion of actual politics of the time into the plot, and the heroine feels like a real person??? The rake and his reformation is enough of a trope that he can manage to feel real with little effort, but so many authors neglect their heroines and their flaws. Not here!

This is an interesting story. Both main characters Oscar and Emily have things in their past that they are not proud of it, and it’s what’s made them who they are today. They become stronger for letting out the secrets and dealing with them, which is fun to read their progression.

The romance was good, but it felt like something was missing. I wanted more from the Lady X plot then what we were given especially the resolution. There was another subplot line that didn’t have a satisfactory conclusion to – for me at least.

"I love you."
"I’m glad. Because if you tried to leave, I’d shoot you."
He huffed with laughter. "I’d deserve it."

this book was not exactly what i was expecting, but all the better for it!

two complicated people with dark pasts weighing them down, falling into an old mine shaft together and having to stay the night in the enclosed space where their secrets spill and they have to huddle for warmth???? sign me tf up!!

Emily’s passion for ferns was very fascinating to read about and the incorporation of political discussions very interesting (if horrifying at that).
i liked the way the book took a new spin to the "he’s a rake/she’s a perfect lady" trope, with Oscar feeling determinedly pathetic and Emily shutting the truth out for so long.

⤷ would i reread? yeah, i think so and i’ll definitely check out the next books in the series :)

PS: *huge plus* content notes at the beginning!!

I never thought I could dislike ferns so much until this book. I'm not sure if I dislike ferns because I dislike Emily or vice versa. Okay book otherwise.
