This is a swiftly-paced novel that I breezed through in a matter of hours. A young man goes diving, gets ensnared by a giant squid and then swallowed by a sperm whale. It gets a bit MacGyver-ish toward the end and elements do strain credulity (though it boasts being scientifically accurate), but it's good fun.
I enjoyed the examination of the relationship between Jay and his father Mitt throughout this story. obviously the disgruntled 17 year old who thought he could never live up to his father’s expectations realizes in the end they misunderstood each other the whole time.
I don’t know I found the rest of it kind of boring, it was confusing to understand the biology at times with unclear descriptions of the whale. I never really wanted to dive before reading this and now I absolutely do not want to.
Also the idea that Jay is going diving to find his father’s remains in the sea, a year after his death? That seems like a far fetched plot to begin with

I enjoyed this book but it wasn’t quite what I was expecting (in a bad way). I was hoping for a little bit more science content and a little less childhood trauma dumping and psychological snaps from our main character.
I still liked it - very descriptive and the pacing was good.

Despite putting on hold for 15 days when I ran out of Spotify audiobook minutes in March and then promptly and completely forgetting about the book, I did enjoy this. Atmospheric, lyric, stream of consciousness prose.
