The flawless, tragic ending to one of the greatest trilogies in all of comics. Breathtaking.

The sprawling full-page spread cityscape illustrations are always a pleasure to step into, but I wasn’t as immersed in this final instalment of the trilogy. Number two may have been the standout. I also had hoped to see more of Marthe and Anna and the Hirschfeld-adjacent subculture that was a huge theme in the second book.

The whole three volume set has been a masterful weaving of art and words in a wonderful combination of powerful storytelling.

I really did enjoy this trilogy of graphic novels, but –let's be frank – it's hard to explore the rise of the Nazi party through the eyes of a disparate group of artists and social democrats and feel anything other than despair. Highly recommended if you're a student of history (and the Wiemar Republic in particular).
