I think it was a great insight historically to all the things affecting someone like Celie, the more notable to me;
I also really loved the format of the book in the form of letters and the literacy of the two sisters' reflected in this - it made the book even more emotional for me.
100% recommend for anyone to read (with discretion to the content warnings)

I really liked the book! I liked the letter structure and appreciated all of the themes covered. I certainly did not expect to laugh out loud at parts, especially so early on. Those who've read the book or seen one of the film adaptations might guess at what was the cause of this!
Didn't have as much of an emotional pull as I thought it would have though!

The epistolary style works well, but the fact that the plot is a “slice-of-life-over-a-lifetime” made it a little bit meandering for me.

Despite the TWs below, Alice Walker’s The Color Purple is a masterpiece. To induce such an visceral response via highly emotive and sometimes haunting portrayals, is truly phenomenal. I am in awe of the writing, pacing, plot and characters. Truly a timeless and sadly still relatable exceptional piece of literature that has thoroughly earned its place as a classic. Everyone should read this. If it can’t spark even a little emotion in you then I don’t know what can.
