Very sad, a reminder this was the reality of many black families. Sad and happy tears.

This book touches on so many aspects in religion, sexuality, and being a Black woman in the south that it is hard to grasp how meaningful it is and what Alice Walker has given to American Literature.

It is a book to further explore and question our beliefs

‘I think it pisses God off if you walk by the colour purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it.’

I loved this so much! It’s a beautiful story about intergenerational trauma within the black community in the South, and one woman’s relationship to God after how he’s treated her.

It’s sensitive and inspiring, and treats it’s characters with dignity, but what is not often focused on, and it’s a shame that it’s not, is that it’s a dual POV story, with Celie’s sister, Nettie, making up the other POV.

Her perspective, as relayed through her letters to her sister,
which covers her time as a missionary in Africa,
adds a lot to how the story may be read. As she gains spiritual enlightenment as well as a greater knowledge of the world outside the one she’s always known.

It’s a message of hope because we see how things can exist variably in different cultures all around the world, and in that way we can see the path to salvation and liberation.

Whether or not it’s a message to us from God, it’s a reminder to all of us that peace and beauty has not deserted us as long as we can notice and imagine it, and I think that’s wonderful.
