Celie writes about her life in letters to God and to her sister, Nettie. Celie has been abused by life and this is very much a story of strength, resilience, and learning. I feel like I’ve learned a lot while also enjoying an amazing story.
I found the writing style sometimes hard to decipher and I did find myself googling words or sounding them out to figure their meaning. At the same time, I really appreciated the use of this style as I felt it was both integral to the character development and made me get even more engrossed in the text.
However, I feel like I may have missed significant meanings on my first read as I was eager to learn what happened to Celie and Nettie. Therefore, a re-read in the near future is a must!

The thing I liked about this book was that even though the sister's letters were never responded to, they kept writing. They had hope they would see each other once again and writing to one another even if they would never read it would help them keep their strong sisterly bond. This part of the story was beautiful.
Moderate: Racial slurs, Rape, Sexual assault, Grief, and Pregnancy
Minor: Adult/minor relationship
