Always a five star read. For the nostalgia, I re-read around the time I went to see the new version of the movie. I plan to re-read again in another few years.

I'm so glad I decided to reread it, I didn't know how to appreciate it before. I loved how Celia grew during the story, seeing her
stand up for herself
was so powerful.

By coincidence I read this book immediately after reading the bluest eye by Toni Morrison and if you have read one please read the other. Both have very similar themes and both are very eye opening/relatable depending on your background. The main character endures much trauma that was common for the time period and demographic and you watch her go through a development with her relationship with herself, her sexuality, her identity both as a black person and as a woman, her relationship with her male oppressors and her relationship with god.

‘’I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it’’

This book is incredible. So painful but so so beautiful.

I love a story about families that are fucked up although this one was fucked all the way up. I love a story about struggling together and finding some manner of peace in the end.
