This was a special read to me, it felt important.

There's some very tough subject matter but the personality of the characters is so tangible and delightful, it's really enjoyable written.

There were one or two points where the style of the writing made working out who was who a little difficult to me, and I feel that the plot did a very fast 180° at one point, but overall I have to categorise this as a must read.

Firstly, I will say that in this edition of the book there is an author’s note at the start. Please don’t read this first if you are not familiar with the story! It gives some minor spoilers!

Celie writes about her life in letters to God and to her sister, Nettie. Celie has been abused by life and this is very much a story of strength, resilience, and learning. I feel like I’ve learned a lot while also enjoying an amazing story.

I found the writing style sometimes hard to decipher and I did find myself googling words or sounding them out to figure their meaning. At the same time, I really appreciated the use of this style as I felt it was both integral to the character development and made me get even more engrossed in the text.

However, I feel like I may have missed significant meanings on my first read as I was eager to learn what happened to Celie and Nettie. Therefore, a re-read in the near future is a must!

This book was great although at some parts I was confused or a little disinterested overall it’s an amazing book and I feel as though the message of female empowerment is so great and overcoming challenges also a great point. I will say it might be a hard read because of the topics in it so I would say there are definitely trigger warnings and to educate yourself on what they are before you choose to read it or not. I would say this book is in my top three favorite books I read this school year.

This book was incredible; however, I would definitely rate it for a mature audience. The sexual content, language, and abuse are quite prevalent in the first third of the book.
