Firstly, I will say that in this edition of the book there is an author’s note at the start. Please don’t read this first if you are not familiar with the story! It gives some minor spoilers!

Celie writes about her life in letters to God and to her sister, Nettie. Celie has been abused by life and this is very much a story of strength, resilience, and learning. I feel like I’ve learned a lot while also enjoying an amazing story.

I found the writing style sometimes hard to decipher and I did find myself googling words or sounding them out to figure their meaning. At the same time, I really appreciated the use of this style as I felt it was both integral to the character development and made me get even more engrossed in the text.

However, I feel like I may have missed significant meanings on my first read as I was eager to learn what happened to Celie and Nettie. Therefore, a re-read in the near future is a must!

This book was great although at some parts I was confused or a little disinterested overall it’s an amazing book and I feel as though the message of female empowerment is so great and overcoming challenges also a great point. I will say it might be a hard read because of the topics in it so I would say there are definitely trigger warnings and to educate yourself on what they are before you choose to read it or not. I would say this book is in my top three favorite books I read this school year.

Really impactful novel. I enjoyed the book despite the harsh and heavy topics weaved throughout.

I don't have the words. Everything from the tone, to the plot and characters is just something incredibly special.

Amazing read capturing life of minorities and the oppressed in different places in the early twentieth century

I think it was a great insight historically to all the things affecting someone like Celie, the more notable to me;
her sexuality, her connection to her faith, and her relationships and how factors like her race and sex come into this - most importantly the unwavering hope shared between the sisters.

I also really loved the format of the book in the form of letters and the literacy of the two sisters' reflected in this - it made the book even more emotional for me.

100% recommend for anyone to read (with discretion to the content warnings)
