I am so glad I took my time to read this book by parts because while there were things I liked and disliked about how it was written, above all I loved the little rabbit holes it took me to whenever I learnt about someone or something new.

I didn't read this book by the order of the table of contents.
It felt like I was reading a collection of notes on her phone.
As an (pretentious) artist and art enthusiast myself, I enjoyed the foreword more than anything especially on her note of Art and Politics and Paranoia reading.
The artists that was mention in the book, all held a special place in my heart and if you look at my copy, you will see little notes emphasizing on the artists and how I remember them by.
I.e.
David Hockney, Cool garden grandpa, national's favourite boomer.
Great collection of essay. I like this book, i really did.

In a minute of synchronicity, I read an essay about the garden and Derek Jarman just before I started reading Olivia Laing's Funny Weather, and to read about her 'overspill of tenderness' towards him was so lovely. Theres a little anecdote in the beginning about how we read now -- looking for the poison rather than the nourishment, reading to confirm our values and suspicions rather than to rest in a different space -- a special thought for a book of criticism, in a time where that is so loaded. I enjoyed it. Also, great cover design?

All around great, even when it repeats itself due to it being a collection of things not originally written to be gathered in a single volume. Pretty much always compelling, despite the fact that British people are deserving of ridicule for not using articles when referring to the hospital! Weirdos!
