Storyline is inconsistent

This story jumped all over the place. It seems like King was just making it up in the fly instead of having a reasoned, well thought out plot. Things just seemed to happen at random with no lead up or follow through. The main character, Everley, is one dimensional and uninteresting. I won’t be reading the rest of this series.

Why do I keep reading books that are so good whose sequels aren't out yet?? Ugh! I truly enjoyed this one and cannot wait until the next book comes out in August! Hopefully the next book lets Everly be happy finally! The poor girl has been sad her whole life and deserves the happiness Jamison can help her find.

I feel like this book was veeeeerrrryyyy slow to get started. I understand they had to build the world and such, but I almost gave up on it a few times. I’m glad I stuck with it though, because the middle of the book was jam-packed!! I enjoyed the action and fantasy and mystery a great deal! The ending, however, left a very bad taste in my mouth. I am not fond of the dissolution of character development for the sake of drama/intrigue, and that is what the ending felt like. Hopefully, book two will provide a better path for this character!

Y'all... come on.

I read through some of these reviews. I based my reading of this book on some of the four or five star reviews I saw here, but I am sorely disappointed.

The IDEA of this story was so good. So good. But the writing? :/

This main character is extremely one-dimensional and selfish.

This book has convinced me that if I can hammer out 300 pages of crap, I too could become a published author.

Wow. I really enjoyed this book far more than I thought I would. I love this author's writing. The story was amazing. The characters were great and fleshed out, even the side characters! Bonus: the cover is gorgeous. Kudos for the slow burn romance that wasn't put above the plot itself. I'm dying to continue reading this series.

My only complaint with it is that Everley knows, she KNOWS, that Markham is a bad guy. It's what her gut and intuition tell her, she witnessed it for herself
Spoileras a child and almost died because of him. Her family was killed by his hand and the hands of his men
. She knows what this guy is capable of, yet about 80% in, when she starts believing he's trying to return to his "true love", all of it just goes out the window and she's struggling back and forth with what she KNOWS over the possibility that he's in "love". It also causes her to have doubts regarding her father and the tragedy of what happened with her family. Girl, no, you're smarter than that.

SpoilerHats off for shocking me with Tavis's death. It happened so abruptly, it caught me by surprise. I literally spent two minutes staring at the page in utter shock.

If you threw a little steampunk, a dash of pixie dust and a soupcon of Victorian era adventuring into some kind of alchemical pot this book might well be the result. Always a pleasant surprise to chance upon something different. Well worth a read in my opinion.
