Megan Abbott contains everything I admire in authors. She is an artist in her story-telling, her characters are hardly characters, rather they bound and leap over the dividing line between fiction and reality. Her attention to detail is unnerving, and the prose and careful selection of nuanced metaphors make it feel like Abbott and the reader share a secret only those who dare to crack open the cover of this book are privy to. I love love LOVE Abbott's writing, and finishing this book was bittersweet, as it's one less shiny new novel of hers I get to read for the first time. The number of stars I would give this book could fill the night sky.

Not a fan - writing was too stream of consciousness for my preference. I like a good, well laid out, well defined story that just grabs me and sucks me in - this did neither and I have to admit that I pretty much skimmed the last 1/2 of the book.

I'm usually leery of books in the first person but this one is written so well.

there’s a certain breed of writer that spends all day on twitter puffing their chest out about how dark and messy and depraved their work is - and they’re never ever gonna get within a thousand miles of this book lmao

Ok, tried it to see if i liked the author after having read Dare Me. I dont care for the author. The writing if filled with metaphorical fluff. Not my thing.

amateur joyce carol oates. with lines so flowery it's shameful. the desired content is there. childhood friendship, obsession, girly mystique.

once the abducted kid returns, things get wild. jelly sandals in the locker room shower; sleepovers, tracing letters on skin; taboo, metaphysical affairs with no tummy touching. last third of this book hits the spot.

What if it’s true about Mr. Douglas, the lantern-jawed science teacher? Did he really say there was no better example of the sublime poetry of hydraulics than Dusty walking down the third-floor corridor?
