In the midst of what was meant to be a romantic escape to New York City, Bree finds herself in an unexpected nightmare. Her new boyfriend Ty has arranged their first getaway, with promises of luxury and romance. However, her world unravels when Ty goes missing, leaving behind a mysterious deceased woman in their rented Jersey City rowhouse—an individual the entire online community is fixated on, Janelle Beckett.

As the police and a wave of internet detectives delve into the perplexing situation, Bree grapples with unanswerable questions. Faced with the urgency to locate Ty and safeguard her own concealed truths, she realizes her only confidant is her ex-best friend—a lawyer with whom she shares a complex and tangled history. The quest for truth unfolds in a gripping tale of suspense and buried secrets.

Garrett does a great job of using this story as an instrument in social commentary on how the media becomes obsessed with cases of missing white women, yet ignores stories of black women and other marginalized groups. I also appreciated how it highlighted ways in which the internet can be a useful tool in solving a crime, but also how it can hinder investigations. While I appreciated these themes that Garrett explored, I felt that the characters and relationships were underdeveloped and I was wanting more depth.

Thank you to Mulholland Books  and NetGalley for access to this advanced copy. Missing White Woman publishes on April 30, 2024.

Always hesitant to say too much about a book before pub, but this one has a super unique concept that ultimately pays off, even though I did not find Breanna to be the most compelling protagonist of all time. Had a wonderful final twist.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. Let me just say, that ending was satisfactory, minus Billie getting away with it. Poor Ty. He really was innocent and got roped up with the wrong kind of white girl. And Breanna went through hell trying to prove her innocence and Ty’s. Idt I would ever forgive Adore for what she did. Yeah she tried to help Breanna, but the damage was done. I have seen many people talking about this book and I  am glad they weren’t lying. This was sooooo good.

Me: "A girlfriend is staying with her boyfriend at an AirBnB, and she wakes up one morning and finds a dead lady at the bottom of the stairs. And the boyfriend is missing!"
7 yo: "The boyfriend did it."
Me: "Seems that way but authors like to trick you in mystery books."
7 yo: "They're allowed to do that!?"

Yes, yes they are allowed.

This started off slightly rough for me-- some of the phrasing felt a little clunky and it took a hot minute to really get everything going. But things ramped up and I got sucked into the plot. I loved the shades of complicated female friendships, internet mob mentality, and toxic influencer culture tackled in this story. I'm definitely going to pick up her previous novel sometime soon. 4 stars.

Early copy recieved via NetGalley.
