Decent Intro!

A decent enough intro into the Guardian Universe, however I felt the characters really lacked strong characterisation in comparison to the movies.

Hopefully Vol.2 shows this more!

This Grumpy Comic Book Guy Review comes to you from someone who found out today (via Wikipedia) that all of his wonderful [a:Steve Gerber|40988|Steve Gerber|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1427368342p2/40988.jpg]-written Guardians of the Galaxy comics books from the 70's (including one of the first superhero comic books I ever read) apparently now took place in an alternate future Marvel timeline. Sigh....

Okay, these aren't the Guardians I read when I was a kid, but they are pretty much the same that you see in the movie (which I definitely enjoyed). And the volume is written by Bendis, whom I have grown to appreciate via his work on All New X-Men. However, after a really nice and emotional Star-Lord origin issue, everything breaks down into confusing interstellar machinations and fight scenes. We also have Iron Man because.... crossover?

The big problem for me is the violence. I get that Marvel pretends less these days that people die in their comics, and the major villains (or fall guys) in the storyline are the Badoon (your basic bloodthirsty reptile types). They're pretty whackable. I even understand why it might be funny for a small raccoon to yell "Blam! Murdered you!" when shooting the bad guys. I don't understand why it's funny twelve times, or why Tony Stark (without his armor) has turned gun happy, or why everyone on the Guardians is okay offing Star-Lord's home people just because his father ordered them to attack the Guardians. I keep on thinking that Bendis wants me to applaud Star-Lord standing up for himself, except I just see all the killing and wonder if standing up is worth all the death.

The art's nice, though....

It was fine, pretty entertaining, but nothing spectacular.

Loved this one! We've got some Star Lord origins, Iron Man hanging with the Guardians, and some great Groot and Rocket storylines. Definitely need to look for more in this series. Always an enjoyable story from Bendis.

am i a tiny bit biased?

yeah, maybe.

but damn i just love the guardians of the galaxy so much, and this was such a great choice to transition me into reading more graphic novels! i wanted to pick something that i felt a little bit comfortable with, and since i am so familiar with the gotg, reading this was like falling in with old friends.

it wasn't so much an origin story, but i did feel like i got a good grasp on where everyone came from.
and it had everything i expected anything guardians: colors! laughs! snark! needless to say, this was a perfect read to get me involved in more graphic novels. :)
