I’m not a fan of soccer, so a majority of this book was underwhelming for me. However where it all came together was the final 2 chapters, “Deserving” and “Forward”, as well as the epilogue. It was cutting, inspiring, evocative. It was the culmination of the book and to me the most important part. Having the context of the previous majority of the book did sweeten the ending. However, I feel the majority of the book was disjointed in its focus and consistent swapping between plot lines. It was messy and the purpose was not clear to me. If the energy and clarity of the final 3 segments was applied to the whole book, it would have improved the experience. Megan Rapinoe is a powerful person who was involved in a lot of key change. I think in general she serves as a wonderful example of the fighting spirit and values I want to see lead the world forward. As a fellow queer person, her perspective on lgbtq experinced and rights was impactful.
