The characters are suffering from various states of shock from recent events. The death of the Solomon, the Sovereign of Jefferson Unit, has left its scars on everyone. Farnsworth has to face life without her beloved, while wrestling with the guilt that she might have been responsible. Sol himself is trying to deal with afterlife. Glen has to handle the unwanted job of temporary Sovereign, while wondering if he has destroyed his relationship with the woman he loves.

Despite their protests B-Company is called back to active duty to deal with an escalating crisis. None of them are handling this new call to danger very well. Then there are Mercy and Raif. Both are wounded from their disastrous meeting at speed dating night. There is no actual villain in this instalment but the characters main challenges are caused by their own personalities, their doubts, their fears.

This is a book about second chances. Risk pain or hide away from the world?

This one focused more on the characters than plot; enjoyable.
