I understand why people gave Sybella her flowers back in the day; she's a stronger character than Ismae in which that her prickly nature, pessimism, and trauma feel more fleshed out. Her background in speckled throughout the book rather than completely stated in the introductory chapter, and her motives and perspectives on life feel justified with each layer that is sloughed off. Her romance with The Beast is also very cute!

I really enjoyed the first book, and decided to continue after learning it was a series. Let me tell you, IT WAS SOMETHING.
First sybella is kind of pitying herself because all she’s endured and done, and that people will hate her and that she doesn’t deserve kindness, but as soon as she finds a man she’s all happy and stuff? Like this book was written in 2013 so I get it, but like… she doesn’t need a man, but she says she’d like to be loved at least once in her life so I totally felt that. I also really liked that Beast wasn’t a handsome guy, and is pointed out clearly throughout the book, which definitely differentiates itself from the majority of romance/fiction. I also didn’t expect the mentions of incest in this book. Like I get it was back in the 15th century and during that it might of been more common bc of lack of morals but it was definitely unexpected. The author goes out of her way to make d’Albret VERY and I mean, VERY unlikable.
Over all, this book definitely shows that people can be loved for more than their looks and can come back from their horrible pasts. Everyone is flawed and deserving of love,
except for d’Albret. Fuck that guy.

This one is so much darker and sadder than the first.  The things Sybella has dealt with her whole life and the journey she is on is a hard one.

(Sexual abuse is talked about)
(Suicidal thoughts)

Beast is my favorite man.  In my mind he isn’t ugly at all because his heart and personality is just the best but the author has stated multiple times that he is ugly ugly lol
Good thing Sybella prefers toads to princes 😍😩

I just really love this series. This pacing is alot faster. A lot more action. And a lot more drama!

I must have faith, but having faith is hard, so very much harder than despair.

Stayed up at night twice in a row, teared up a few times. 10/10
