I really enjoyed the first book, and decided to continue after learning it was a series. Let me tell you, IT WAS SOMETHING. First sybella is kind of pitying herself because all she’s endured and done, and that people will hate her and that she doesn’t deserve kindness, but as soon as she finds a man she’s all happy and stuff? Like this book was written in 2013 so I get it, but like… she doesn’t need a man, but she says she’d like to be loved at least once in her life so I totally felt that. I also really liked that Beast wasn’t a handsome guy, and is pointed out clearly throughout the book, which definitely differentiates itself from the majority of romance/fiction. I also didn’t expect the mentions of incest in this book. Like I get it was back in the 15th century and during that it might of been more common bc of lack of morals but it was definitely unexpected. The author goes out of her way to make d’Albret VERY and I mean, VERY unlikable. Over all, this book definitely shows that people can be loved for more than their looks and can come back from their horrible pasts. Everyone is flawed and deserving of love, except for d’Albret. Fuck that guy.

I must have faith, but having faith is hard, so very much harder than despair.
Stayed up at night twice in a row, teared up a few times. 10/10
