I had No Expectations for Great Expectations had yet was somehow disappointed.

I started reading this book when I was 15 but never finished it. I started reading it again anew at the beginning of this year - I have read around 20 other books within the time it has taken me to read this book.

It is lacklustre, dull and boring andPip is selfish and arrogant. Though the book is almost 500 pages long barely anything happens aside from Pip lamenting over his own lift and being rude and horrible to the people who care about him.

I have read books that aren't particularly my still or have found slow paced but I've still read them fairly quickly. This however lacked any substantial interest. I thought it was going to get there with the incident with Orlick but it was over quicker than it had began.

I have given it two starts rather than one because it had some interesting period but those were very few and far between. I also recognised an obstacle was the style and period of writing, which is my own personal preference and at the very least I didn't find it offensive. And after all, though it took me almost 10 years, I did manage to finish it.

Overall, the book became a chore to read and I feel like a weight has been lifted now that I never have to pick it up again.

Truly the longest it has ever taken me to finish a book. I will admit that my reason for reading this novel is for my A-Level course, but I enjoyed it to an extent. The plot was fantastic, as well as the characters, but unfortunately I cannot fully enjoy Dickens' style. I am aware that he was a fan of detailed descriptions etc. but I feel as if too much was shared, to the point that one may become slightly bored, there were so many things that were described that I didn't feel were that relevant to the plot. Overall, it was okay.

Pausing for now because Pip is such an ass. Will continue another time. Such a fantastic book- this is more of an emotional choice than anything. Justice for Joe Gargery

I passionated hated Great Expectations when I was forced to read it in 9th grade, but I always suspected that the reason I disliked it so much is because we were tested on so many mundane details -- what time did the clock stop on Miss Havasham's wall, etc. I can now safely say that even when reading for fun, I still dislike Great Expectations. I can appreciate the deep character development, the coming-of-age plot turns, the vivid descriptions - but frankly, Dickens' wordiness makes me lose interest quickly.
